How to Protect and Maintain the Finish of Your Walnut Table

One of the main benefits of using walnut to make furniture is that it is beautifully polished to a luxurious velvety finish. Much of the topwalnuttables are made from walnut, creating beautiful quality statement pieces that will stand the test of time.

If you want your walnut furniture to look as good over time as when you first brought it home, it needs a little TLC to keep it in tip-top condition.

If you are lucky enough to own walnut furniture, we suggest the following ways to cherish your pride and joy.

  • Avoid rough, and scratching cleaning material
  • Clean with care and responsibility
  • Always use table mats and placemats
  • Clean up spills directly
  • Choose cleaning products in a suitable way
  • Prevent direct sunlight

Avoid rough,  and scratching cleaning material

At Top Walnut Tables Store, we proudly supply the Gilly range of furniture cleaners, which are Australian-manufactured and owned. All of these are suitable for use on walnut furniture.

For those who prefer to use traditional wax-based products, Gilly Cream Polish is a light, creamy beeswax polish designed to nourish and protect a variety of wood furniture. Ideal for French polish works, giving off a beautiful high shine.

A great alternative to waxing when a high shine is not required, Gilly's Orange Oil has excellent cleaning properties and is perfect for cleaning and restoring old furniture that has been neglected. Used as an all-purpose oil for the maintenance of wood and wicker furniture, orange oil is 100% vegetable and food-safe, silicone-free, and has a great scent. It darkens the wood as if it were wet - the natural orange color does not stain.

Clean with Care and Responsibility

We recommend using a microfiber cloth when dusting walnut wood. Touch the cloth lightly and avoid rubbing the surface too hard. Alternatively, dampen a soft cloth with a dusting product to avoid small dry scratches on the surface.

When dusting or polishing, always lift vases, centerpieces, frames, and decorations instead of pushing them aside.

Always Use Table Mats and Placemats

As we know other walnut materials such as dining tables, sideboards, coffee tables, and side tables are susceptible to scratches if not protected from daily use.

Use tablecloths, coasters, and coasters to protect as many flat surfaces as possible.

Clean up spills directly

Wipe up spills immediately to prevent milky stains from forming on the surface of your walnut furniture. Do not place hot cups, pots, serving plates, etc. directly onto the walnut surface. It can discolor lacquer and resin-based finishes and melt wax.

Choose Cleaning Products in a Suitable Way

Twice a year, protect your walnut finish by applying a furniture wax or silicone-based varnish to the surface. Do not wax walnut wood finished with polyurethane varnish, as unpleasant wax buildup can occur.

If you have furniture with walnut oil, apply a thin layer of linseed oil once a year and rub it into the wood until the oil is gone.

Prevent Direct Sunlight

Do not use walnut furniture outdoors. If you do not want the original color to be bright, please place it indoors out of direct sunlight.

Unlike many kinds of wood that darken over time, walnut lightens over time, but you can slow this process by keeping it out of direct sunlight.
